I stopped and got a chance to acknowledge the moment. Grants are a ton of work and managing can get stressful. But today I got the reminder why we do this. I’ve been busy working on the logistics that I forgot to celebrate this moment. Thanks to the students for reminding me.
At our SACNAS meeting, the students organized a meeting to talk about summer undergrad research opportunities. I was up to share out a on big grant awarded earlier this month to me and 2 colleagues (more deets later). When I shared the amount award, the students all clapped and cheered. 🥰 1/2
Someone emailed me & ended with Happy Thanksgiving. As an Indigenous person, the holiday to me commemorates the arrival of settlers to North America leading to centuries of oppression, genocide & colonization. I emailed them to be mindful of holiday greetings & not everyone celebrates.
What’s fun day getting 6 FLC students out on mountain bikes on our local green-level trails! Logistics of loading bikes, coordinating various levels of learning and avoiding others (tarantula) on the trail. Such a fun day!
Best Friday afternoon break between meetings! Took students out to our campus mountain biking track to practice skills before our ride tomorrow! The CO Outdoor Equity grant helped us hire a student coach to get comfortable with skills! It’s fun to get students to try new adventures!
The #2023NDiSTEM conference ended w/recognition as SACNAS Outstanding College/University Mentor. Unexpected & thankful. 🥰Dr. Ramirez was also acknowledged & we got a photo together right before the closing. FLC students & alum celebrated w/a group dinner. What a wrap ❤️🥹🤗 to the amazing conference!
I know right!!
I survived this big crowd & talk. I had to laugh when a FLC student shouted “That’s my professor!” I got to share my science story & celebrate #NativesInSTEM#RepresentationMatters. Being at SACNAS reenergized me & my heart is full.
Soooo that will be 2 days until my featured speaker talk 😬 for SACNAS. It should be a fun time! Made it through midterms & getting over a cold. Ready for reconnecting with friends & making new ones!
