I think my first exposure to it was seeing a random episode on Toonami and being curious why Zatch had the same voice as Jimmy Neutron. I think the episode was with Gofure (the dog mamodo) so the imagery of a cute dog turning into a scary beast stuck with me. Got me to seek out the manga.
Oooh, you were lucky to catch it at such an early episode, too! You didn't miss too much beforehand!
