This week we start to read the Torah all over again from the beginning. We read the verse that tells us that human beings are created in the divine image. The one where we're all created from one common ancestor. And we read the verse: "Your sibling's blood cries out to me from the ground!"

In fact, the Rabbis observe that “blood” is actually in the plural (“bloods”), and conclude that this refers not only to the death of this person, but the loss of many possible future generations that they may have brought into being, had they lived. So much life. So much loss.
