I am working on a space ttrpg that is basically 5e but in space. No magic though. 6 classes, each with 2 subclasses. 8 Species. Space combat that plays like regular combat, and PC ships have their own character sheets and stats.

That's pretty much the way to do it. Trying to do a space game without sufficient attention to the ships seems weird.
