I hate, with the intensity of a thousand suns, how gambling has become omnipresent in sports. The way these sports-betting degenerates abuse players is nothing short of disgusting. Yes, there's a lot of money to be made. But sports are being ruined for a lot of people--fans and players alike.

As the ball swished through the net, the bench erupted, Barrett’s teammates knowing full well what he’d sacrificed and endured. His bucket would be the last for the Boilermakers as Purdue cruised to a 78-50 win. Back in the locker room, Barrett picked up his phone and scrolled through the congratulatory texts from friends and started to search through his DMs on social media.

He stumbled on this:

You sure are a son of a b—.
Hope you enjoy selling cars for the rest of your life.

Followed by:

I hope you f-ing die.

And then the kicker:

Kill yourself for taking that 3 you f-ing worthless loser. Slit your f-ing throat you f-ing f– that was completely uncalled for. I hope you f-ing kill yourself.

The Boilermakers were 27-point favorites against Grambling. Barrett’s bucket meant they won by 28. “I had no idea what the line was,” Barrett said. “I’m just out there, making memories with my friends.”

In my naivete, I really thought sports betting would be heavily regulated right out the gate, like smoking. Silly fucking me!

Where is this generation's Brandon Walsh to teach them right from wrong?

Yeah, but a few people are making a LOT of money and isn't that really what it's all about?

Sports betting is fine and should be legal. Advertising it should not be.

So with you. Was in North Carolina, where they passed betting recently and was absolutely inundated by ads on social media to bet. It's disgusting. And for sports players to promote it - was thinking about the Pete Rose debacle and how poorly that went. Does anyone remember the Black Sox scandal?

When people use the term "late stage capitalism," this is the kind of thing I think about. Everything becomes about money. I don't think I'm naive enough to think that sports were pure before or anything, but the corruption is undeniable.

I feel the same way. I’m not against gambling at all but I’m up to my neck with hearing odds/spreads/props/etc as a part of every broadcast

The pervasiveness is really apparent in all the YouTube sports commentators. Really those channels (and those individuals') bottom lines are via endorsements, mostly of sports betting, but also of other products. Yeah, capitalism? 🤮

I was watching the MLB channel and they had like a 5 minute sponsored gambling segment right in the middle of their regular show, and appeared to just be a normal segments. Really not great.
