I tie the circulation of Jones’s image with the transmisogynistic 1840 campaign slogan “Granny Harrison, the petticoat general,” which Democrats deployed against Harrison and which Robinson also illustrated in the cover image.

A comparative reading of these two lithographs from the same publisher allows us to make a better reading of how cross-dressing moves through the racial imagination in the 1840s, which will be crucial to my examination of the criminalization thereof.
