I became permanently disabled from a car accident. The other driver had the state minimum insurance. I had a 100k under-insured policy. After the lawyer got 40%, I got the equivalent of about a half year of salary. I was only 45, can't work anymore, and had to move out of the country to survive.
If you think this is bad for crash victim, look up “contributory negligence” that is the law of the land in Maryland. We’re one of four states that if the victim is deemed at all negligent, they can not recover any damages.

The Boston Globe did an investigation years ago into why Massachusetts had some of the highest car insurance rates in the country. Basically came up with “Yeah, we really are all just terrible drivers.” Was kinda comical.
