Having previously made bad decisions does not in any way compel one to keep making them in the future. Philosophical consistency is worth fuck-all compared to the value of doing the right thing in the here and now.

It was never a lifetime ban. The deal to which he voluntarily agreed made him “permanently ineligible,” and I’m perfectly happy to hold him to the letter of that deal. He can stay un-honored until the heat death of the universe, and it will still be better than he deserves.
