1/ Reminder that violent crime has gone down since the 1960s, and wage theft and civil asset forfeiture have gone up since the 1980s. Cops stole more property than burglars stole in the last five years. More money is lost to wage theft than lost to all violent crimes for the last five years.
Sources? That all rings true but I am suspicious of anything that seems tailor made for my confirmation bias.
Violent crime peaked in the early 1990s, it's much lower now, may be safer than it was in the 1960s, but I wouldn't swear that's true.
I always wonder about the Hidden Statistics that accompany stuff like this how many cops have committed violent crimes that aren't being included in the statistics? how much crime did the US move in-house by giving the police military equipment and qualified immunity?
2/2 So if the point were about preventing property loss and effecting actual harm reduction, we would start with employers not paying their employees for work done, and from there move on to laws that allow cops to seize property before we ever got to burglaries and violent crime.
