I think there is a mostly insular bubble of assholes that nobody can stand except for other assholes. Non-assholes tend to avoid assholes, and spend time with other non-assholes instead, leaving the assholes with the perspective that everyone else is also an asshole.

They end up with this combative thick-skin tough guy brutal posture toward everybody. They make "friends" with people who give it back, and are shocked (shocked!) that others don't want to be around them. They call those people snowflakes. But no, they've just entered the asshole bubble.
