I lived in Britain for many years, and there are a number of these odd pronunciation differences: "pasta" is also pronounced with a short "a." Just try saying it out loud! And of course, "oregano" is "oruh-GAH-no," which always threw me!

I'd never thought of it this way before, but that's a great way of stating it, and helps explain why GR has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

In Britain, they do tend to say "noo-gah."
Going through my latest book now one more time before submitting it to the publisher for typesetting. It's astonishing how many little things still need to be corrected! Gaaah!
