I lived in Britain for many years, and there are a number of these odd pronunciation differences: "pasta" is also pronounced with a short "a." Just try saying it out loud! And of course, "oregano" is "oruh-GAH-no," which always threw me!

In Britain, they do tend to say "noo-gah."
