The beetle family Tenebrionidae are called darkling beetles, so here's one for Teneb Tuesday. I believe it's Embaphion sp., probably E. muricatum. It is the beetle version of shallow candy dish, although instead of candy it has caramel-colored mites hitching a ride at the back. #insects 🐙🌿

A closeup photo of a black, oval shaped beetle walking on sand. The beetle's thorax and abdomen have a flared, upward-turned edge, giving it the look of a shallow dish. There are several very tiny mites hitching a ride at the rear of its wing covers.

Does the dish collect moisture?
