One of her best looks (which is honestly saying a lot, she has a million).

I wrote a little bit about the problem of trying to make lists like "the 100 Greatest Horror Films" and suggested 100 other horror films that I like that don't usually make lists like those. www.patreon.com/posts/proble...

I adore it. The Tom Waits and Willem Dafoe episodes especially.

And I agree about his jokey mini stories. They're fun. The punchlines land. It makes me wish Rod Serling had pushed for Matheson to be a regular writer on Night Gallery. The co runner Jack Laird was responsible for a lot of short jokey segments that often didn't work at all.

But more often than easy dismissals, he'll have a story which is perhaps problematic when you consider the metaphor, but as surface level pulp is still a great little story. In "Lover, When You're Near Me" Matheson crafts an inspired tale on the horrors of women-run societies.

As Lady Bird once philosophized, they're called Greatest Hits for a reason. The collections he curated in the 50s do have a couple duds in each one (some casual mid century racist and sexist one-noters that nobody blinked at then but would not get reprints today) but also some awesome discoveries

I've now read all the unread Richard Matheson books I have these last two weeks. 3 collections of 13 stories each. Couple years back I read The Best of..., which I think has 33 stories. Some on this kick were re-reads, most were new. I've now read 60 of his short stories. Perfect spooky time reads.

Book cover announcement! My deepest and most heartfelt thanks to the darling The Adams Family for allowing me to feature our dear Zelda on the cover (from their 2021 banger Hellbender). Now on pre-order through McFarland, more news soon.... mcfarlandbooks.com/product/the-...

Black book cover with a blue-and-white image of a striking young woman in a tin foil crown. The words "The Cinema Coven" are at the top in yellow text, with "Witches, WItchcraft and Women's Filmmaking" at the bottom of the page, just above the author's name, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
