The shit that Feanor says to Nerdanel in the Shibboleth is outright sexist. His sons kidnap a woman and try to forcibly marry her and an entire kingdom is like yeah w/e about it. Please. I'm dying. I need essays that engage w the actual textual stuff v going gender is fine bc LaCE said so :)

There is an astonishingly high amount of actual/attempted male control over women in the Silm and also a lot of textually broken up elf/elf marriages! The most successful ones are either interspecies or peredhel/elf or peredhel/peredhel w the notable exception being Galadriel & Celeborn

Like pls, I just want to satisfy my suspicion that elf sexual relations can be characterised by the heteropessimism form (already have proof/substantiation of that for Numenor) or to have it definitively debunked by actually engaging w the gender relations as they exist textually

For whatever reason my brain has fixated on Understanding The Relations Between The Sexes Amongst Elves and I have to say the amount of writing that takes LaCE at face value versus what we see textually is...deeply annoying to say the least (esp. when it gets defensive about it)

Of their canons. Though to be fair the fandoms also have conservative politics that they think are very progressive. And that's the point at which I stop posting bc I have no desire to argue to prove this. I did that. I'm wiser now.

We should have an equal extended term for when ppl insist the deeply conservative politics of their fandoms are super duper progressive bc they literally don't know anything outside of Tumblr posts abt anarchosocialism (not even actual socialist or anarchist politics w theoretical grounding)

The term smith college problem is so useful for the weird things ppl latch on to in fandom. "Let fictional men/women be friends" "its ok to write fiction without sex in it, it has value" these are smith college problems and are ttly detached from even fan culture outside of ao3

Fr for me it's the whole idea that abusers/PPL w awful politics have some eau de evil/have always been ontologically evil to them that only the wise can perceive. Which is the flip side to "that's impossible they've always been good/kind" in response to any accusation.

The internet is so much easier when you look at 99% of stuff and just say “not my business” and move right along.

Yes I realise that "your fave sucks and does not have enough of a canonical personality to have the most widely read gossip column of Valinor" is not a proportionate reaction to a silly poll but....it is....what it is....I need to Log Off >:(
