New week, & this time it’s Eidos Montreal. I’m so, so sorry. You have all my love & solidarity. This madness has to stop.
Okay, Lions, for a number of reasons I’m gonna need you to step up and win this shit. All of it.
It’s also based on a novel. Gerwig & Robbie, OTOH, dreamed up something entirely new & sui generis. It was so surprising bc nothing like it has ever been seen before. It sprung from a vision on a groundbreaking level, as do Poor Things, Killers, & Oppy. Can’t say that for TZOI or the others.
I’ve now seen 9 of 10 Best Pic noms (-Past Lives). Not having seen Nyad, I can’t say for sure Robbie merits Bening’s slot (the other noms are defensible), but Gerwig absolutely should’ve been in Glazer’s slot. Zone of Interest is quite good, but its strengths are not primarily visual. +
If you think David Bossie floated that RNC resolution—making the Trump the nominee after only two states & 400K votes cast—all on his own w/o Trump being in on it & coming out ready to turn it down so as to look good for doing so, I’ve got a bridge in Tacoma to sell you.
These layoffs are even more galling bc these companies are laying people off in anticipation of a recession that by now clearly isn’t coming. WSJ predicted US GDP last quarter to rise by 2%; today it was announced that it rose 3.3%. To use recession fears as cover is grotesque.
And again. 1900 people laid off at Microsoft/Activision-Blizzard. So, so sorry. My love and support goes out to all affected. I think it’s time for the appropriate federal agencies look into the way these things are happening. Drag the CEOs in front of Congress. 🤬
I’m reminded by this piece that Greta Gerwig also didn’t get nominated for Little Women, an incredible film. She, Celine song, & Ava DuVernay were all worthy. But apparently there’s still only one seat for a woman in Best Director. www.vulture.com/article/osca...
Greta Gerwig was robbed of a nomination for Best Director.
Yup, that part I’m okay with. It’s healthy. But I’m just gonna miss her so much.
Unexpectedly so, for me. I mean, I knew it intellectually, but it just hit me emotionally today.
