Faculty knows what this means but most people don't. It means 70% of all US faculty are being paid close to minimum wage.

My wife did the math for a PhD physics adjunct position in Columbus, IN. (This was in 2020, so they didn't have any Chinese to take it, as they'd all been forced to leave the country for the duration.) It came out to slightly over a dollar per hour *even if she half-assed it*.

I have 2 family members who are adjuncts at Washington University in St. Louis. There was a push several years ago to basically unionize. It's high time to bring that back! They're exploited hard.

This prompted me to do the math for the first time. When I was adjunct, I was making $8.88/hr if I just calculate class time. That's not including time spent on class prep, grading, etc. It also doesn't include the 3 hours I drove each day to get to and from classes.
