My participation in nature and politics? Eyelashes! Let's assume every day I lose (conservative estimate) between three and six eyelashes. Within one year, that would amount to 1095-2190 eyelashes. Since I surfaced ā€” 38325-76650. Not a bad contribution.

For #smallpoemsunday, a small one from my last chapbook (of the same name) from Model Press.

happy #smallpoemsunday! šŸ’œ if you feel so inclined, you can participate by posting small poems you wrote +/or small poems you love by someone else :) hereā€™s one by Ruth Lepson (ā€œThese Treesā€) and one by me~

THESE TREES

after Iā€™ve left
these trees
their insistent green humming
will shine
and all my emotions
will have been
just that
mine

2 Poem without the letter ā€œeā€ (starting right now)

Itā€™s changing how I build my small raft
and float on it through living. Itā€™s living
in our world as a bird, as though you
hadnā€™t thought of that. Itā€™s a book shut
loudly upon finishing its last word, or
music that stops without any warning.

Iā€™d call it what it is, but for now I must
call it duration, a fun mind trick to blur
our days into unity. Of all birds I know
your down is most, uh, fitting, or do I
want to say warm. I donā€™t know which,
and actually I donā€™t know if I think
itā€™s important to pick. Iā€™m just thinking
until my small raft finally starts to sink.

THE GRAINS OF SAND

The grains of sand
are imperceptibly threatening the page
and your hand casts a shadow in the center
of dazzling,
you are writing below the level of breaking waves
and could cave into the sea if you stayed
here long enough.

Narcissus to Achilles

Yesterday, I passed over a bridge
and saw a boot underwater.
Such thoughts I had,
I cannot tell you.

WHAT WE LOVE

is always of course a dream
and determined by little things
years ago

it could have happened
in a porch swing or the back
seat of a car but it didnā€™t

I kept an appointment
among wild syringa beneath the pines
it was late evening almost dark
with the moon in its cradle

I remember the smell of leaves
coated with dust but who was it
who was it
can I admit I do not know
