"If we get rid of the electoral college candidates will ignore smaller states" say people living in a system where seven states decide the election
As Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump begin the final 30-day push for the White House, they are locked in a neck-and-neck race from the Rust Belt to the Sun Belt.
With tight contests in all seven battleground states, the candidates are pressing for a few thousand votes that could sway the outcome of the entire election.
I'm in Los Angeles County, more populous than 40 states and larger than 2, which means that for presidential election purposes I'm basically living in an electoral nonentity within an electoral nonentity.
The small states wouldn’t be ignored—their votes just would carry the same weight as everyone else’s. If we’re not going to institute the national popular vote, then at the very least electoral votes should be allocated based on a candidate’s vote share in a given state. No more winner take all.
Here in California, it feels like it should be reported as World News. "You've learned the quaint customs of the people of Pennsylvania -- how the capital city enjoys its sandwiches, what a 'yinzer' and a 'WaWa' are -- now watch with us tomorrow night, as they finally elect their President!"
The EC means none of our votes really equal "1" and the elimination of it mean 1 vote for 1 person. ALL WE NEED IS THE 'POPULAR' ELECTION.
Without the electoral college, Republicans in MA and CA, etc, and Democrats in Texas, Utah, Montana, etc, could all cast meaningful votes.
"Without the EC, they'll only focus on the handful of most populated states!" they warn, as they support a system where politicians only focus on a handful of less populated states
I’m in Raleigh area, I personally have noticed a major decrease in Presidential commercials since hurricane (note- I only see commercials on Hulu, no live tv). I am seeing more state level commercials, but the volume overall is still way down.
I live in Louisiana, & neither party cares bc the state is a guarantee trump win. At least New Orleans has a modicum of sense…
I live in Wisconsin 🧀 🐄 🥛 🧈 and I resemble that remark, dammit!
