Our weekly tropical plant ID night in the LSU herbarium was extra successful tonight! The newest #LagoLab undergrad Nolan dove right into the deep end; he went from learning opposite vs. alternate leaves to IDing his first plant (a Chloranthaceae!) within an hour.

Infrequent attender of Evolution? Never attended, but might want to? We're still curious about your thoughts on future meetings. If you've got 5 minutes to answer some questions, we'd be grateful.

Excited to share work on a new phylogenetic biome shift model! Model lets species gain and lose enabled (fundamental) and established (realized) biome affinities through historical events A joy to work w/ the intrepid Sean McHugh and Michael Donoghue www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...#evolution

Screen capture of ancestral biome affinity reconstruction for subclade in Viburnum. Pie charts colors indicate enabled affinities for biomes, black centers indicate established affinities for biomes.
Diagram of biome shift model (RFBS) events. Panels show how species gain and lose enabled and established affinities through anagenetic and cladogenetic events under RFBS.

Rocoto and I are both pretty jazzed by today’s Andes-inspired @barkbox! Not enough plants for my taste, but he seemed to appreciate the taste of tapir 😅.

Love this, and not to be a pedant: but this change really has everything to do with nomenclature and nothing at all with taxonomy (at least directly!).
