Color me skeptical of this if it’s entirely based on DNA analysis. Even if correct, it’s not remotely dispositive of what his social identity actually was. There’s some allusion to historians questioning Genoa origins, which is far more suggestive to me than anything conflating identity with dna.
It’s interesting news to me that there are questions about this, it’s not my field. But pre-modern and early modern experiences of national or ethnic categories are not encoded in DNA.
