Look up the origin of the word "waldo", as in remote manipulator. Much earlier in life, the guy who wrote the book in question (Heinlein) invented the waterbed because he was bored, hospitalized with tuberculosis in the 1930s. Designed a better hospital bed down to circuit diagrams.
