BNG has recently become mandatory in England, requiring most developments to produce a 10% uplift in biodiversity units to get planning permission. #CEEC24

This exciting project uses a Convolutional Neural Network alongside traditional bioacoustics indices and will reconstruct past soundscapes to look at temporal changes in these metrics. #CEEC24

Sound is a key means through which many of us experience nature and birds are often the major contributors to natural soundscapes. Soundscapes can be linked to a range of wellbeing benefits we get from spending time in nature but are often underrepresented. #CEEC24

To kick off Session 1b at #CEEC24 we have a talk from Claire Buchan: Spatial and temporal variation in the characteristics of natural soundscapes.

This advances understanding of genes responsible for deleterious mutations and can inform captive and wild populations management. There are also wider implications to identify overlooked signatures of bottleneck events in other species. #CEEC24

Jessica’s work investigates the impacts of deleterious mutations in wild and captive Cheetah populations. She has identified a number of genes with previously unreported stop codons, including some associated with male fertility. #CEEC24

Approximately 10,000 yrs ago Cheetahs went through a severe bottleneck event and some populations had symptoms of inbreeding depression. They are now listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN red list and face many threats throughout their range #CEEC24
