Wait what? this is a thing in English?? I've only ever heard my stepmom say this and I thought it was a my-stepmom-ism that she made up from knowing a bit of Japanese. Who is saying this?? is it generational? regional?

I’ve always heard this and, like others I think, assumed it was Yiddish or something. It’s like “honcho,” also Japanese, which I was blithely certain was Spanish until a few years back.
