4 yrs ago today, my poem Easy Words, released to music I produced, with visuals by Slade Ham. It was a summer held uncertain by the pandemic & blighted by repeat shocks from police brutality. A fire brought to simmer still burns. www.youtube.com/watch?v=I89U...#poetry#music#blacklivesmatter

Easy Words
Easy Words

Full lyrics below. Poem and music production by Uche Ogbuji. Video by Slade Ham. https://uche.ogbuji.net/ http://www.sladeham.com/ Arguments to forestall justice are running on E. Courage to all who are loudly expressing the point that enough is enough. Fellow Americans (and all citizens in your respective countries), be sure to register to vote, and to vote. #SpokenWord #BlackLivesMatter #HipHop #Poetry #BLM #Music #ICantBreathe! You're running on easy words while fathers are telling their boys How to survive a police encounter as if surviving's a choice— A hundred different strategies all borne out of the hope That the father that's still alive found the secret for dodging the rope. You're running on easy words when the badges with all their training Can't be relied on not to kill a child in some fear nobody's naming. And the boy is tall as a man while barely a teenager We can only guess how his awkwardness might prove a mortal danger. You're running on easy words while fathers fret for their daughters Whose brown skins get taken for deep, discomforting waters That the self-possession that should be her protection in the wilderness Will trigger the weak-willed to weave against her their wickedness. You're running on easy words while governmental intelligence Grows, and corporations help in AI surveillance of the citizens In the USA, in Russia, in China and in Brazil You carry political distinctions to the families of those you've killed. You're running on easy words while all your old religions Become your current warehouses of inhumane traditions. You fetishize your flag and felonize other nations Then rain down brutality on your own during demonstrations. You're running on easy words while your best and your brightest Protest with the knee down, fist up gesture to the righteous So you strip them of their dues, slash the fabric of their ambition Because power and easy words mean you think you don't need to listen. You're running on easy words and quick to change the topic To a shop with shattered windows, jeopardy to lifeless objects, Some humans in the wrong means a balance sheet in the red But what about those who do wrong and leave innocent humans dead And yet we run on easy words while expecting the immigrant Who worked to build a business to accept that its destruction is imminent To sacrifice their life's work to the burning fury of justice Though we know they won't be bailed out by the very system they trust in. You're running on easy words when on the corporate letterhead You edit the COVID communique to scribble BLM instead While with one percent of your profits that go to the one percent We could educate all every child worldwide of colonized descent. You're running on easy words but slow to wean your engines Of fossil fuels that choke us to fund catastrophic vengeance Against the unprotected in Yemen, Syria and Kurdistan Against Uyghurs, against indigenous people in every land. You're running on easy words; you're nailed into your position So there's pain in being moved; so it's easier never to listen. You're running on easy words and eager to tell your story And throw everybody else's into some simplified category, Stuck in old ideas of what it means to be strong Because easy words don't teach you to accept that you could be wrong.
