I find it weird that The Guardian insists on using this photo to indicate "universities", and I *actually went* to this college

Oxford university right now:

The college I worked at would often complain about finances but still had a 'wine fellow' who would go on trips to curate the wine collection.

Tbf, that figure includes the colleges, which are separate entities (and v expensive to run - eg. heritage assets including a cathedral). The University's endowment is about half that. The total of £8bn is certainly a lot by UK standards. But Oxford competes with Harvard ($50bn) and Yale ($40bn).

Well, they had a bit of a head start on the rest of the sector.
