Yep, they had a good thing going with Tasha’s ruling that just gave every species a +2/+1 or 3 +1’s. Lots of build diversity there, now it’s just a straight jacket on player creativity. Couldn’t they have copied PF2’s background scheme of two fixed attributes and then choice for the rest?

I think the boon/bane of 5E is that narrowing the number of modifiers and choices makes the game simpler but it also means that each choice becomes way more significant to the system. PF having lots of choice points means you can be much more flexible and not damage your PC
