My first ever conference in Italy they invited me - a poor grad student who hadn't even registered - to join the conference dinner for free. It was in a medieval castle. With 4 courses, wine & grappa.
I had a similar experience (but no castle) and i wasn't presenting my own work. I just happened to be around and was reading a paper for an American prof that couldn't make it.
