In honor of spooky season, please enjoy one of my favorite "kid logic" conversations.
Most striking findings: isolation of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase variants that support efficient noncanonical amino acid incorporation even at extremely low concentrations in the media. This is extremely rare for evolved aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (across literally hundreds of studies!). (2/2)
Chang Liu's lab (UC Irvine) created a system for rapidly evolving aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases for genetic code expansion. Yuichi Furuhata + Gordon Rix led exptl effort. The work also utilized some of my lab's reporter systems during screening. (1/2) Preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Genetic code expansion (GCE) has become a critical tool in biology by enabling the site-specific incorporation of non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) into proteins. Central to GCE is the development of ...

I really enjoyed The Terraformers—Annalee Newitz is a genius, and my views and biases are always challenged in the best ways possible when I read their work. $2.99 is practically stealing!
Whaaat? You can get the Kindle version of my novel The Terraformers for just $2.99 from now until 10/9! Can you really afford to miss this opportunity to learn about moose romance, cat journalism, and a civilization of nonbinary people who live under a volcano? www.amazon.com/Terraformers...
The Terraformers - Kindle edition by Newitz, Annalee. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading The Terraformers.
Not as great news: administrator asking why the value of the award is the same as the cost of the instrument we are purchasing. Response I wanted to give, minus expletives: "dude, how do you not know that this is a thing?!? We requested the quoted price of the instrument and were awarded it. Duh!"
Great news: the Van Deventer Lab has received supplemental funding to further advance chemically expanded antibody engineering and its applications! We are purchasing a new analytical flow cytometer. Thank you, NIH!

Unpublished book drafts and other documents raise questions about Robert Winnett’s journalistic record just months before he is to assume a top newsroom role.
I am overjoyed to announce that I have secured tenure and promotion! Many people made this possible. My research group learned to thrive during the pandemic, my family was relentlessly supportive, and many others propelled me onward…there is a lot to be thankful for!
