Memory of the Mirrored Hall of Brussels, Otto Dix, 1920

This picture was meant to shock. It was painted by the avant-garde German artist Otto Dix in 1920, depicting a crimson-faced German general, flushed with red wine, groping the swollen breast of a fleshy, naked prostitute during the German occupation of Belgium. The multiple mirrors replicate the scene from every angle, so that the woman’s crudely painted vagina can be seen in reflection on the brothel floor, while her buttocks frame the scenes in the right-and left-hand sides of the picture.
