The only other tip I know is that you should use good quality flour to feed it. We noticed that Walmart was starting to cut theirs with starch because our starter didn't like it. Pretty sure we use King Arthur brand now.
Most places that make their own sourdough and are halfway decent should be willing to give you a little especially because when you feed it you either need to bake with some of it or discard some anyway.
I would have to ask my partner for specifics, but you'll need a starter, basically a culture that lives in your kitchen and you have to feed and take care of it especially before you split it to bake with. IIRC we got ours from a local bakery and they've been taking care of it for like 60 years.
