Perhaps it is not the responsibility of neurodivergents to put on a mask and pretend to fit in (at the cost of our own mental and physical health), but for the rest of the world to stop talking, and to start listening. Meet us halfway.

I cannot express how absolutely, utterly heartbreaking it is when someone tells me they prefer that mask over my genuine self. They're telling me, not in so many words, "being autistic is unacceptable, but if you delete everything about yourself and live a lie, we can be friends."

Many of us have masked for our entire lives in order to get even a shred of social acceptance. When we feel comfortable with someone and risk removing that mask, we're often talked down to, denigrated, and told to "be better." Told to put the mask back on.

Autistic teenagers are roughly 25 times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers. Autistic adults are 6-10 times more likely to attempt it than their peers. Autistic people are significantly more likely to be the victims of sexual abuse.
