Verisimilitude Archives Log 5.012 From the neurologs of Ga-Kash: Our traversal of the Space Beyond went forward in the manner that wormhole transportation had always been intended: by inducing a temporary gravitational collapse we tunneled through spacetime, creating a bridge between two distant points, and without the issue of escape energy we were free to push the output of the wormhole drive to ever higher levels. So the voyage carried on: we would coast to conserve fuel while a charge could be built then jump a considerable distance through space. A terrific bore for Sha-Kotah, though harrowing for Lo-Konta and myself. Were the drive to cease functioning, we would be forever trapped in this aberrant plane. It was during one of these intermittent charging periods that we witnessed something that affected Lo-Konta deeply. We had just emerged from one of the jumps feeling particularly disorientated. Despite having experienced wormhole traversal several times by
then, we were not quite accustomed to having our perceptions jumbled by the squashing and churning of spacetime. As we took a moments rest, attempting to shake off our impairment, a series of chirps came from Ko-Tul's console. He drew his attention to it, reading the output blearily. "Lo-Konta," Ko-Tul said. "You may want to peer at this. It could be something of interest." The physicist plodded over to the navigator's console, quickly becoming more aware as he read the output. "These readings are fascinating," said Lo-Konta. He pointed at the screen. "Over there in that luminous region, it appears to be some sort of high-energy particle storm." The captain became concerned. "Is such a thing dangerous?" Ta-Garn questioned. "Do you recommend we change course?" "It is said that particle collisions of such energies could create micro black holes," said Lo-Konta. "And yet stranger things if the theories are correct." "Such as?" prompted Ta-Garn. "What is called false vacuum decay," answered Lo-Konta. "Though
we had no reason to fear such a thing in our own universe. Its vacuum energies are known to be globally stable." "Explain," said the captain. "Vacuums aren't really empty," he began. "They are made up of quantum fields in their lowest possible energy configuration. No particles, no matter, just a tiny amount of energy." "And you said this vacuum energy is stable?" Ta-Garn interjected, growing impatient. "Our own universe is stable," he answered. "Yet I can make no guarantees here. We have theorized about the existence of false vacuums, vacuums that are metastable but can suddenly tunnel to a lower energy. Think of a universe as like a stone on a mountain, resting comfortably on a ledge; static, but not at the bottom. Were but the right push given, what would happen?" No one answered. "It would tumble the rest of the way down, to its inevitable ruin, the effects of this new energy spreading out like a wave's crest. If one could survive the process, what would be left would be unrecognizable, incomprehensible, a world so radically different as to be utterly foreign, invading the previous like a tumor."
Scarcely had he said that when something like an imperceptible wrinkle in the shifting haze suddenly smoothed out. A distant flash then erupted out of the murk, steadily becoming brighter until its glare filled the view from the bridge. The light had already begun to fade when in its wake could be seen, starting from a pinpoint, an abyssal silhouette, quickly growing, the nucleation bubble swallowing the remnants of the nova. We braced ourselves as it expanded further and further, nearer and nearer, not stopping until it became an endless expanse, the black wall seeming nearly to touch the nose of the craft. Then it stopped. Time seemed to stretch in the silence of that moment. An eternity passed before Lo-Konta finally spoke. "It stabilized... The cavitation stabilized," he released a held breath, reaching out a shaking hand as if trying to touch the thing. We all knew what we were looking at. We had all seen it before. It was an exact duplicate of the event horizon seen at the first contact: A fledgling universe. "This is it. This is the answer. The Council has searched for so long, striving to uncover the secret of our origin, and here it is, far beyond the confines of our own realm,

Verisimilitude Archives Log 4.847 From the manu-docs of Sha-Noth: Upon the initial discovery of the extra-dimensional space, hopes were kindled among theorists that the confirmation of large extra dimensions would herald the development of new math, allowing us to finally reconcile the disparate elements of our physical knowledge. It is now clear to me that a multiverse of this shape only leads to further contradictions. In the current model, universes exist as "bubbles" swimming in a higher dimensional space. However, the changes to the math created by this new model are not enough to explain the hierarchy problem: the calculated loss of gravitational flux is simply not enough to explain why gravity is so much weaker than the other forces. We now know that in order to attain a sufficiently low value for the gravitational constant, many more dimensions, perhaps infinite in number, are necessary. Thus we come to this conjecture: suppose the extra-dimensional space containing the multiverse were
itself a bubble universe, and this universe itself a member of a multiverse inhabiting its own extra-dimensional space. Suppose this recurrence is iterated infinitely, producing endless layers upon layers of multiverses nested within each other. This new fractal cosmology is not without problems, chief among them being the absence of bubble universes within our own. The recursion depth of the model is necessarily infinite, so one would expect to find them, yet they simply don't exist. Inflation theory tells us that every universe must have a beginning, a point in time when, from a dense singularity, a universe and everything in it blossoms. Perhaps this hasn't happened yet. But could such a thing be possible? Is there some process by which an entire universe could be formed within our own? Is it only a matter of time?

Verisimilitude Archives Log 4.681 From the neurologs of Ga-Kash: As the ship emerged from the turbulent chaos of the wormhole, we were granted our first glimpse of the Space Beyond. No two crew members had the same reaction. I heard Sha-Kotah joke, her voice somehow piercing the overwhelming poignancy of the moment. "I have to drive in this weather?" she asked, Ta-Garn grunting in response. Lo-Konta stood silently in a state of awe. Ha-Chash slunk away from a nearby viewport. The look on Xa-Tith's face was most perplexing of all. It was a look of recognition, as if he knew beforehand what to expect. He somehow knew that unknowable, shifting hue filling up the main feed, if it is possible to know what one cannot wholly see. It seemed to me that the visual sensors struggled to capture the full extent of the void's glow, so far was it beyond the scope of our technological capabilities. We stayed silent for a while, but it was not long before we
all felt it: A liminal presence, barely perceptible, pulling on our atoms, a feeling of some unfathomable intelligence that was undecided whether to reject us or draw us in deeper. It was as if our very presence in this place violated whatever semblance of order existed here, the physics of the Space fighting us as an immune system fights a virus. I thought for the first of many times of this place as the dwelling of some living being which we had invaded. I can't say for sure if this is near to the mark. It may just be a pareidolic association of mine, a reaction to something so alien that it surpasses my understanding. But something in this place feels alive, and it knows we are here. I could see Lo-Konta gazing blankly into the void. "It is calling," he muttered, perhaps louder than he meant, perhaps unaware anyone was even listening. I myself could hear nothing save for the monotonous hum of the various consoles and navigational equipment populating the bridge, yet as I peered into the soft, ever-shifting glow of the yawning expanse before us, I could feel a pressure at the edge of my awareness, beginning to burrow into my thoughts.

I visit her sometimes, but she only looks at me and cries. Sometimes she talks to herself when she thinks I'm not watching, but I can't understand the words she is saying. Father says she is sick, but I'm not so sure. I've never seen her like this before. I wonder when she will be well again. I want my mother back.

Our computing officer, the computer scientist Ja-Nan, is another oddball. He seemed extremely eager to learn of the capabilities of the wormhole drive, picking my brains about it the moment the debriefing ended. As I navigated his questions, it became clear he was interested in functions far outside the drive's intended capabilities. When he realized he could pry no more out of me, he became disinterested in conversation, turning to his console to begin work on some strange project. I later expressed some interest in his work, and he could scarcely hesitate to share his bizarre theories on artificial intelligence. I attempted to provide a polite audience, but his esoteric ideas flew over my head, far surpassing my knowledge of computing. The final member, Lo-Konta, a physicist fresh from the great theorist Sha-Noth's research team, was a pleasant surprise, being a familiar face from my early days of the academy. Though our
careers diverged, we quickly bonded over our shared experiences and interests. Our fields, after all, share much of the same bones, mine being a practical application of his. We spent the hours between launch and the first waypoint in conversation, regaling each other with tales until we were called to prepare the wormhole drive for our plunge into the unknown.

Verisimilitude Archives Log 4.350 From the neurologs of Ga-Kash: It was with no small amount of trepidation that I agreed to set foot on the Verisimilitude. More times than I care to count I've done so on similar research vessels, yet in this instance that stride felt like a turning point, a threshold beyond which there could be no possible return. Despite the overwhelming amount of preparation behind it, this was to be a prototypical voyage: The first on a wormhole-capable vessel, untested by the dangers of space and the mysteries that lie beyond its bounds. To be engineer of such a craft feels less an honor than one might expect, and more a sentence. Its moniker, Verisimilitude{\sffamily---}\,it is an important word to us. It means "closeness to the truth," the notion that while truth can never be known for certain, our theories can be measured against each other and falsified, bringing us ever closer to the flame's light. Indeed, the name we call ourselves is rendered as "truth seeker" in
the old tongue. To us the search for truth is a journey everlasting without a destination, each of our lives but a small part of it. In this endeavour our voyage plays a role, to seek out the truth of this new world which has unveiled itself to us. It is fitting then that we have chosen for our ship's name to reflect the aspirations of our people, though no mere expression of optimism is enough to deaden my anxiety. No less singular than our transportation is our crew, a menagerie of experts in every conceivable field, collected into one place and herded into this flying metal coffin. The captain Ta-Garn, a gruff veteran of many journeys, is a name known to me. I served under him on a previous voyage many cycles ago, and he expressed some measure of recognition through the brusque grunt that served as his greeting. One of few words, he rarely speaks outside of giving direct orders, though when he does speak up his words carry weight, capturing attention in a way that belies their volume. There is a quiet magnetism about him, an aura of a leader whose authority comes not from charisma, but from the experience he demonstrates with even the least of his invariably
measured actions. Seeing him here is a reassurance to me in the face of the journey ahead. Following the captain to the bridge, I was greeted loudly by a diminutive figure lounging in the pilot seat, impatiently tapping her fingers on the controls. She introduced herself as Sha-Kotah, and I was immediately struck by her fiery personality, her brashness and sharp-tongued speech bordering on insubordinate in her dealings with the captain. At first glance her seeming greenness was concerning, no more than a few cycles into adulthood and easily young enough to be Ta-Garn's daughter, but his endless patience for her quick wit told me that he valued her greatly. I soon learned that she had been a child prodigy, having racked up more than enough time in the cockpit by her coming of age to prove herself among the most experienced of helmsmen. Joining her in the bridge was her counterpart, the navigator Ko-Tul. I blinked a few times as I found myself faced with Sha-Kotah's opposite: Where she is short, he is tall. Where she is hot-blooded, he is mellow and cool-headed, quietly performing his duties with a reserved dedication. I couldn't help but notice
the irony of the relationship between our pilot and navigator: While it is Ko-Tul's job to act as pathfinder to Sha-Kotah, he is naturally a follower, she leading him in all other aspects. I was satisfied with my crewmates thus far, but I could not quite dismiss my misgivings about the first officer Xa-Tith. He is something of an enigma to me, a closed book. If our captain is one who says much by speaking little, then Xa-Tith is his opposite. He speaks as if to redirect conversation towards what he wishes others to know. Little of himself does he reveal, however much he says, though for that I do not fault him. We all carry the burden of our memories, each of us, and it is not for others to bear them. Still, his closeness gives me little reason to trust him with my life. The rest of the crew soon arrived, making up the research team. I immediately noticed the most eccentric member, the biologist Ha-Chash, doubling as medical officer. A timid recluse, I found her trying to hide herself in a corner of the bridge rather conspicuously. She immediately withdrew following the debriefing, secluding herself in the medical bay, but stuck around long enough for Sha-Kotah to take a liking to her, calling her "Hacha" and adopt
