The thing about the 'leaving the USA to escape fascism is selfish' discourse is that it was never sincere; they never objected to people leaving the US for career reasons (especially those going to Europe,) and obviously saying this about those fleeing Nazi Germany would be grotesque.

A lot of those making this argument would be more or less fine under Trump, but need fascism to exist as a threat that will encourage people to Vote Blue, and preserve the status quo. But that status quo would be threatened by people actually fleeing.
