Her creator (the gnome) was in an adventuring party, and after a TPK, she was lonely so she used their bodies to create a lab assistant, Selma! Adding on her own pinky toe was sort of a sentimental way of keeping the party together. (She herself was paralyzed in the battle from the waist down)

That's honestly bittersweet, but that's such a warm center to the story, even if it has tragedy behind it.
