We have seen incredible transformations of the GOP over the last 20 years - they were always shit, but they are quite differently shit now - as they were taken over in turn by at least three different movements. Parallel efforts on the left to transform the Dems underwhelm, or even don't try that.

The Democratic Party is more heterodox than the a Republican Party, but it is def more left than in the 90s on a whole host of issues.
