4th Place was above average for the 22-year old franchise whose “peak” had thus far been 2nd Place finishes in 1912-13. So regilar were the failures that by 1904 sportswriter Charley Dryden joked of “Washington: Forst in war, first in peace, last in the American League.”
1923 was literally a mediocre season for Washington. The Senators had a winning record against all the teams that finished beneath them, 11-10 against the 3rd Place Cleveland Indians, and a losing record against the 2nd and 1st Place Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees.
Welcome to January 1st, 1924. The New Year dawns seeing the Washington Senators looking to improve from a 4th Place, 75-78 finish in the American League in 1923.
