There is also a lot of interest in this space more broadly for natural resources management, precision forestry, and conservation. Happy to answer more specific questions, but that's the high level overview.

Data like this can be useful for a lot ecological questions. Many of the processes in forests operate at large scales, so understanding forecast gradients and dynamics. They are also useful as covariates for studies of things that rely on trees - birds, mammals, insects, etc.
