Humans do lots of peculiar things (think: hot dog eating contests, parliaments). But religion stands out as truly exceptional. I argue that religion isn’t so much *an evolutionary puzzle* that we need to solve, it’s 2 intertwined puzzles. I call them The Puzzle of Faith and the Puzzle of Atheism.

in the animal kingdom, belief in gods is vanishingly rare. it’s only evi- dent in a single lineage of hominids. Yet among those hominids, belief in gods is overwhelmingly—but incompletely—the norm. Zoom all the way out with a broad biological lens and religious belief is an aberration between species. Zoom in a bit further and it’s atheism instead that stands out as exceptional within our species. Any comprehensive theory of human nature must account for religion. but any comprehensive theory of religion must also account for atheism

The Puzzle of Faith is about the simultaneous uniqueness and ubiquity of religion – how we became the only religious species. What are the cultural and evolutionary pressures that have most members of our species, and no members of other species, worshipping their gods? Why religion and why us?

Image of a spider hanging out on a stone wall that also includes a neat bit of carved iconography of some sort. Photo is by Vihaan Talya Vikas, and is featured in the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photography of the Year exhibit. Here’s NHM’s full description of the work:

“Vihaan Talya Vikas (India) watches as an ornamental tree trunk spider prevents its prey from escaping.
Visiting an ancient tamarind grove just kilometres from Bangalore Airport in India, Vihaan was struck by how an ornamental tree trunk spider seemed to have been entranced by the sound of Krishna’s flute.

This species - a type of orb weaver spider - creates a wheel-shaped web of sticky threads to catch flying insects. As the spider grows, it elongates its web, which entangles anything that lands on it. The patterns on the spider’s back have been known to attract prey while its bright orange belly is thought to startle potential predators.
