Have you been to Blackwell's Books? If not, it's just around the corner and is indescribably wonderful.

Can we pass a law requiring government agencies to post emergency info on their freakin' WEBSITES and not just on Twitter?!? (I'm looking at you, TVA, which was tweeting about the imminent failure of Nolichucky Dam in TN last night while posting no updates on their official website)

A tweet from the Tennessee Valley Authority on the night of September 27-28 2024 reading "(UPDATE) TVA's River Forecast Center has activated a Condition Red Warning for an Imminent Breach at Nolichucky Dam in Greene Co., TN. The breach could occur at any time due to extreme rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, which is causing record river levels around the region. Potentially life-threatening flooding can occur as far downstream as Douglas Reservoir. Local county emergency management officials are coordinating evacuations as appropriate. Please stay alert for notices from your local EMA and heed all warnings."

I love the ones with a little fly-sized hole - “give the fly a chance”!

I love their spiky trunks. They look like something that a brontosaurus might nibble.

Sounds like pre-2022 text will be the "low-background steel" of linguistics research:

This database of word usage frequencies in different languages will no longer be updated because text generated by AI LLMs has irreversibly polluted the data sources. 🧪

And it's not just California - other states have similar databases you can search:
