I understand people think they’re real progressive when espousing “abolish copyright” but in a capitalist society that’s a contextually anti-artist stance. Artists can’t survive in today’s environment without ownership of their work. Upend the broad economical system first, then let’s talk.
Usually, the people who say that just want to be able to take from others without being called a thief
Even then, I think it's off mark. Profit motive wasn't why fascists took Pepe as their mascot. People should have recourse for their voice being used to say things they'd never say.
Most of us are more "abolish corporate copyright abuse".
There are ways to tackle copyright within capitalism. Scientific works behind paywall, and public government documents placed behind site readers with fees, can & should enter the public trust. We also have tons to do to IP laws that exist solely to shore up corporate profits. So, there's a range!
It's definitely something that would mostly be taken care of by "abolish corporations" and to a lesser extent, "end copyright troll lawsuits." A person having control over the product of their labor is quite progressive in my book :)
it's like how libertarians want to "abolish government" and don't think they'd end up as bonded serfs to a corporate overlord within five years
I think anti capitalist talk tends to be anti artist talk. There is no answer to the issue of Tetris.
There should be some changes though. Corporations shouldn't be able to hoard IPs. And you should be able to make derivative work of your childhood influences by the time you have children that same age. Disney turned Copyright into something it shouldn't be.
