As I argue in the conclusion, this fake egalitarianism represents a key pillar of white supremacist systems and reveals the role that fraud plays more broadly under white supremacy. It is a defining feature, not a bug.

Frisbie’s case not only reveals the systems of deception that animate white supremacy—that reconfigure a system of violence and plunder as one defined by benevolence and virtue—but also shows the crucial role that faux egalitarians play in maintaining racial capitalism. These “humanitarian” agents of empire uphold racial, gender, and class hierarchies by ensuring that radical rhetoric not only remains empty but actually undermines equality. Without them, the frauds of white supremacy—depicting theft as accomplishment and Black subordination as freedom—would be impossible. Rather, as we assess the historical destruction of multiracial democracy by the forces white supremacy, and how it benefits the few at the expense of the many, it is crucial that we understand the roles of men like Frisbie, as well as of those who enabled him, in the sabotage of Reconstruction. We cannot know justice and equality without knowing Frisbie.
