Plus if the news is just pro wrestling for politics geeks you can't actually follow through on your promise to bring the temperature down/restore probity
And there probably is a toothpaste out of the tube problem with both Trump and Brexit - a lot of consumers and producers of news clearly prefer the soap opera aspect of news to the educating and informing aspect and they don't want to go back to slow and unexciting.
