As expected thanks to the chilly N'ly airstream, #temperatures struggling today..with added wind cooling effect ..And just look at the contrast N to S across mainland Europe!

The Arctic stratospheric polar vortex is off to a slow start, with 10 hPa 60°N zonal winds struggling to intensify through September. Dynamic variability isn't yet active at this time of year, so this is not like a weak vortex in midwinter.

It's not immediately clear why the vortex is so weak, but polar cap ozone has been running at record-high levels since spring. Possible that additional stratospheric heating from this ozone is weakening the meridional temperature gradient & thus the zonal winds (from thermal wind)
