Ok I farted this out after seeing it

Megalopolis (2024)
2 1/2 stars
As someone who thinks about utopia and cares about how it’s represented in stories—not just about getting there, but the actual imagination of it—Megalopolis had me at turns totally delighted and witheringly disappointed. I can’t fully admit that its philosophizing was nonsense, but it was made extremely difficult to connect with.

If there is a metanarrative here about Coppola having unlimited artistic license as an anti-tyrant to make what he wanted, then there are no doubt brilliant things about this movie waiting to be discovered. But it would mean that the journey to discovery will be entirely too fucking embarrassing for everyone involved.

The main conflict that I cared about—between Cesar and Cicero, governing for the now versus governing for the future—is one that I really enjoy seeing depicted, and I think it’s the conflict that was given the most care here. Props.

Props also to the totally stacked cast, a bunch of people I like to see, and especially to Aubrey Plaza, making fools of themselves. Bravo. This should make some good gifs
