i don't know but we are more than willing to break his standard across our knee if we have to do so in order to get it to do what we want
we're making our own mastodon network with customized software, one that isn't connected to mastodon in general. imagine if cohost was made up of a bunch of people's websites talking to each other. you can sign up for whichever one of those you want and talk to someone on any of them

it's centrally governed, run via a consensus process that's worked well so far, and the fact that it's not an "anything goes" type of deal like Mastodon means we can do a lot of things they can't. we're working on a cohost-style frontend, a way to embed CSS posts, and a lot of other things.
it's an island network. basically, a bunch of activitypub sites that are all connected to each other, with allowlisting, instead of denylisting, so that it can't touch the Fediverse we're using specific software with the features we need, patched to remove numbers and global feeds and so on.

also: as the person who initially came up with the idea, i can wholeheartedly say i do NOT want to be in charge of it. i've seen what a BDFL structure does to broad communities *and to the people running them* and i absolutely do not want that for either this project or myself
