After my ADHD diagnosis yesterday my friend who also has it gave me this book to borrow. When saying ‘thank you, I’ll now need to summon the attention to actually read it’ he says he couldn’t stay focused enough to read it either. Is this a test?? Or a joke?? Is this what the ADHD club does?
That's one of the many that I haven't read. I'd suggest something by Russell Barkley. I can't suggest a specific one, since I read his 1000 page textbook, but I really feel that he's on the right side. For something light that I have read: Gabor Mate's Scattered Minds is easy and okay.
Yep. Besides, if you have it, why do you need to read about it? Our club president is Dorrie. 🐟 🐟
When I was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago my psychologist recommended that book! I also didn’t finish it…
Timely post. I just restarted 5mg daily of Adderall and it helps so much. There are lots of coping strategies you can follow but I also recommend checking into some of the meds available. Good luck 🍀
Yeah, everyone with ADHD has this book. None of us have read it. I don’t believe anyone’s read it. I’m not even sure there’s words inside. Seriously people are gonna give you lots of things to “help” you but the best help you have is knowing what’s going on now.
I have this book, as well as "Stop Procrastination Now." They're both on my "to read eventually" list. It's been 20 years.
To echo others in this thread, Russel Barkley is great youtu.be/q9Ua8ef-pUwyoutu.be/GjW8ZdmwE1o
In this short video I discuss the popular concept of masking, claims that adults with ADHD do this more than to others (neurotypical people), and that it is harmful to those doing so. Such claims are made at numerous websites. Here I challenge these ideas arguing that masking is common in typical people, that is socially appropriate to do so, that there is no evidence it occurs more in adults with ADHD, and that there is no evidence to masking is harmful to those who engage in it. The example websites I showed in the video are: I am Busy Being Awesome: https://imbusybeingawesome.com/adhd-masking/ Very Well Mind: https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-adhd-masking-5200863 Additude: https://www.additudemag.com/adhd-masking-signs-consequences-solutions/ The two quasi-research papers I found in journals on masking and ADHD are here: M. G. Harris et al. (2023). The experiences of medical students with ADHD: A phenomenological study. PLoS One. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0290513 W. J. van der Putten et al. (2024). Is camouflaging unique to autism: A comparison of camouflaging between adults with autism and ADHD. Autism Research. https://doi.org/10.1002/aur.3099
I have this book. I have ADHD. I’ve only read the first few chapters.
those font choices feel like a hate crime against people with ADHD just on the cover
It's prolly meant for parents of ADHD kids, maybe? Or they could just be so credulous that they can't grok their subjects might not be able to process it right? That's my best guesses...
