'Citizen' comes from Old French 'citeien'. It got its z because it was contaminated by 'denzein', also meaning "resident". 'Citizen' later influenced 'denzein', turning it in 'denizen'. Words that are etymologically unrelated sometimes influence each other. Four examples:
