I dunno how or where or when it started, but the idea that art isn't a set of extremely technical skills, and is instead some sort of purely emotional exercise is fucking bullshit. People without technical skill will not know how to mix paint, draw a nose, or design a font.

If you're talking about skills, you're not talking about art. You're talking about craft. There is an overlap, but it's not the same thing.

Idk depends what you count as art. To me a toddler painting with finger paints is still creating art. Being a professional artist requires lots of raw technical skill, but to me people simply expressing their emotions through creating something is still "art" as well.

You have the 18th century romantic movement to blame for this and you know it

I can mix paint using the oooold school RBY method. A nose would be well, cartoonish and designing a font? That's *MAGIC*! Which makes me appreciate even more those that put in the hours to polish their skills to make the art I love

I think the ease of digital creativity in its most trivial forms has created this attitude. Taking and developing a single photograph required physics and chemistry knowledge. Game development requires a multitude of interlinked disciplines. But word processing, DTP & KDP means everyone's an author.

Tbf it’s both. Different kinds of art, etc. Everyone can make art, but not everyone can make every kind of art.

I'd say both - without skills you cannot show the emotions in your art, but without emotions your skills falls flat (unless you do some extremely technical art, like designing a building or car)

All creativity, from baking to dance & everything in between, requires a degree of knowledge & skill, but you don’t have to do Cordon Bleu to bake a cake or learn ballroom to twirl on the dance floor. You don’t have to be an expert to gain joy from creativity. Learn & work to your best ability.

You think someone without technical skill is going to know the first thing about teaching a ballerina the proper form when exercising and stretching? Someone without technical skill is not going to know how to design a book cover or paint the Sistine Chapel. Fuck off.

I don't like it either but the subjectivity of art makes it difficult to define the parameters of an art related skill. 20 years ago many people argued that digital art wasn't art because it was too easy. Art can be a banana nailed to a wall and it is hard to embrace that and still talk about skill.
