American sheriffs are elected, right? Do 50% of the voting population think this is ok? SMH

What always strikes me as weird is that only certain municipalities have sheriffs but most just have "normal" police departments hired/run by local gov't. And all the sheriffs seem to be in the Red/GOP states....
