I think, related to the zoning, is their transit systems often are terrible. So many suburbs have this combination of exclusionary housing and transit policies at their core which is often directly connected to many of the purported benefits of suburbs.

Ed Glaeser's work reminded me of this point - about how suburbs reliance on automobiles inherently is going to exclude a lot of people who can't afford relying on owning and maintaining a car.
